A Perfect Circle wurde nämlich 1999 als ein Nebenprojekt von Tool-Sänger Maynard James Keenan gegründet. Neben 3 Libras gab es zwei weitere Single-Auskopplungen (Judith und The Hollow) vom Debüt-Album Mer de Noms. Der Titel ist französisch und bedeutet auf Deutsch wortwörtlich „Meer der Namen“, ist rein phonetisch betrachtet allerdings fast deckungsgleich mit „merde noms“ („Scheiß-Namen“) .

Die Zeitschrift Visions setzte Mer de Noms in ihrer Liste der „150 Alben für die Ewigkeit“ 2005 auf Platz 71. Michael Rensen vom Rock Hard verglich das Album mit einem „nächtlichen Strandspaziergang am Rande einer pulsierenden Cyberspace-Metropole“ und hob den „düster-charismatischen“ Gesang von Maynard James Keenan sowie das „Songwriting-Niveau“ insgesamt hervor. Die Bewertung lag bei 8,5 von zehn Punkten.

* Maynard James Keenan, in the A Perfect Circle EPK stated, “It’s about being overlooked.”

* In the liner notes to the single, Keenan said: “Up until the mid twentieth century the mountain gorilla was considered a myth. Oddly enough, a legend not unlike Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster. The chance of actually seeing/experiencing this elusive shadow was as likely as finding one’s soulmate. Rare. Precious. Even once discovered they seemed unapproachable. The only way to get close to this magnificent creature was to become empathetic. Abandon all pretense and preconceptions. To bare an open throat. To collapse into the arms of vulnerability. All but extinct, these beings/moments are threatened by the black hearted. The cold and oblivious. The empty eyed profit seekers that overlook these Rare. Precious.”

* Keenan shed some more light on this song in their aMotion DVD, where he explained that this is a song about parasitic-like people seeing something different or special about a person. Instead of nurturing that quality or helping that person grow, the “3 Libras” feed off of the energy in a bad way instead of using it for good.

* On aMotion, Keenan also mentioned that he wrote the song for about 9 or so people in his life that have birthdays around the same time, hence the name “3 Libras.” He titled it so the people with the Libran birthdays could battle it out to figure who he wrote the song about.

The title references an idea first conceived by Carl Jung and later expounded upon by Drunvalo Melchizedek concerning the possibility of reaching a state of evolution at which the body would have two more than the normal 46 total chromosomes and leave a currently disharmonious state. The premise is that humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 and 2 chromosomes, according to Melchizedek.

Furthermore, the song references a wish to experience change through the “shadow”; an idea which represents the parts of one’s personality that one hates and fears, which also exists as a recurring theme in the work of Carl Jung.

Der Albumtitel ist ein Kunstwort, das aus dem Begriff Anima (zu lat.: anima, -ae f 1. Wind/Luft(hauch) 2. Seele), der vom Psychologen Carl Gustav Jung neu geprägt wurde, und dem englischen Wort für Einlauf, „enema“, besteht. Als ungefähre Bedeutung ergibt sich demnach „Seelenreinigung“: mit einem „Enema“ wird der Darm gereinigt, mit einem „Ænima“ die Seele. Alternativ kann auch vermutet werden, dass einem eine Seele eingegeben beziehungsweise einlaufen gelassen wird, wenn zuvor keine oder zu wenig Seele in einer Person existierte.

In der vom deutschen Musikmagazin Visions aufgestellten Liste der 150 Platten Für Die Ewigkeit erreichte das Album Platz 8.

Der Titel “Die Eier von Satan” enthält ein auf Deutsch vorgetragenes Rezept für Haschischkekse.

Zu Metallica brauch ich hoffentlich nicht mehr viel zu sagen. Textlich ist das Lied eine Umsetzung des Romans „Johnny zieht in den Krieg“ von Dalton Trumbo. In diesem verliert ein Soldat durch eine Landmine auf dem Schlachtfeld Augenlicht, Gehör, Sprache, Arme und Beine. Er wünscht sich den Tod, kann dies aber aufgrund seiner Verletzungen nicht zum Ausdruck bringen. Er bittet um Hilfe, aber niemand kann ihn hören. Schließlich schafft er es, mit der Außenwelt zu kommunizieren, indem er mit dem Kopf Morsezeichen auf das Bett klopft.

‘One’ war übrigens Metallicas erstes Musik-Video überhaupt.
